What’s the deal with dessert-flavoured supplements?

As protein supplements have become more popular, a trend toward sweet, dessert-flavoured supplements has emerged. Today you can buy protein powders that taste like mint chocolate chip, strawberry milkshakes, s’mores, and red velvet cake batter.

The trend is understandable – traditional supplements don’t always taste great. After all, these are health products; they’re designed to deliver real, impactful benefits. Combining great taste and tangible health benefits is possible, as we think we’ve proven through our line of all-natural products, but, unfortunately, many of the dessert-flavoured supplements on the market prioritize taste over results, making them about as healthy as the foods they seek to emulate.

Companies use a couple of tactics to sweeten their supplements. The first is to add artificial sweeteners like sucralose, aspartame, and acesulfame. These additives are effective at masking the supplements’ natural flavours, but also carry several negative side effects and have been linked with obesity and diabetes.

The second tactic is to add natural sugar under one of its many deceptive names, like corn syrup or fructose. Sugar, even when derived from natural sources, is incredibly damaging to health when consumed in abundance. We recently blogged at length about the dangers of sugar – check that out here.

If you’re concerned about the presence of artificial sweeteners or added sugar in your protein supplements, carefully read the labels and look for products that are explicitly free of these ingredients.

“People choose protein powders because they want to put something good in their body,” RDN Megan Ware, owner of Nutrition Awareness in Orlando, told Prevention.com. “So you want to avoid ones that add unhealthy ingredients to the mix.”

 

Protein supplements, when derived of natural, vegan, and organic ingredients, have myriad benefits that contribute to healthy lifestyles. Because protein is considered more satisfying than either fats or carbohydrates, supplements are effective weight-loss tools. They can also promote muscle gain when used alongside a steady workout routine.

Importantly, protein supplements can also be an incredible source of nutrients. Most adults don’t eat their recommended daily servings of greens or protein – supplements can help ensure the body gets the nutrients it needs.

In many ways, natural protein supplements are wonder-products that facilitate optimal physical performance. But some products are simply too good to be true: if your supplement of choice happens to taste like a chocolate-peanut butter milkshake, it likely won’t provide the same health benefits as an all-natural blend.
