What is whey?

Cow’s milk contains two types of protein: casein and whey. Whey’s popularity as a performance supplement comes from the fact that it contains nine essential amino acids and is relatively low in lactose content.

Sweet or acid whey is produced during the manufacture of cheese, and whey protein is a mixture of proteins isolated from this substance. Whey protein primarily exists in four forms: whey protein concentrate (WPC), whey protein isolate (WPI), whey protein hydrolysate (WPH), and Native Whey.

The forms of whey differ in production cost, extraction process, and composition. WPC is made up of roughly 70 to 80 percent protein and contains lactose and fat. WPI consists of roughly 90 percent protein, but lacks some of the nutritional benefits found in whey concentrate. WPH is the product of hydrolysis and allows the body to absorb amino acids more quickly than through intact proteins. Native whey is unique in that it is extracted from skim milk and is not a byproduct of cheese production.

The Benefits

A casual Google search for whey protein will deliver dozens of enthusiastic articles extolling the many virtues of whey protein – it aids weight loss! It lowers cholesterol! It prevents cancer!

To be sure, the presence of essential amino acids, which your body cannot naturally produce, are a major benefit. According to LiveStrong.com, whey proteins contain all nine essential amino acids, which makes it a complete protein source.

But, as Medical News Today points out, evidence for other claimed benefits is based on one-time studies; more research is required before these benefits can be confirmed.

Potential Risks
