Family-friendly exercise: how to stay healthy with your kids

October 10, 2018 0 Comments

Numerous factors contribute to children’s health: mental wellbeing, performance in school, nutrition (a factor that can be bolstered by the use of high-performance natural supplements), and, of course, physical activity. Unfortunately, Canadian children aren’t as healthy as they could be.

According to a 2018 study released by ParticipACTION, a national non-profit organization promoting healthy living and physical fitness, Canadian children do not get anywhere near enough exercise. The Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines suggest that 5- to 17-year-olds spend at least one hour per day engaging in physical activities and that 3- and 4-year-olds spend at least 180 minutes. Only 35 percent of the older age bracket and 62 per cent of the younger reach this target.

Physical activity has myriad health benefits for children, including heightened creativity, problem solving, and self-esteem; better memory and longer attention spans; and decreased risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Failing to engage in physical activity, on the other hand, contributes to poor cardiovascular health, decreased muscle strength, sleep issues, increased weight, and diminished classroom performance.

“From increased cognitive skills to improved mental health, physical activity has profound impacts on kids’ brain health,” said ParticipACTION chief scientific officer Mark Tremblay, according to CTV News. “So, for their brains’ sake, it’s time to get kids sitting less and moving more.”

Exercising as a Family

Family-friendly exercises and physical activities are a great way to keep your kids active and spend quality time together. Below are a few ideas for staying active as a family unit – don’t forget to stay fuelled with the help of Paleoethics’ high-performance natural supplements.

Hiking is an incredible way to spend time with your kids, enjoy the outdoors, and participate in some challenging exercise. For families that live outside of the big city, hiking is accessible and inexpensive; if you live downtown, consider making your next family vacation a wilderness retreat or canoe camping expedition. You’ll exercise through the day, witness some beautiful scenery, and spend the evening bonding around the campfire.

Establish a dance night! Dancing is a great cardiovascular workout, an opportunity to encourage creativity, and a chance to let your hair down with your kids. Let everybody pick some tunes and don’t be afraid to crank the volume – your dance night should be an escape from the stresses and challenges of the work week.

If your kids are getting too old to dance with their mom and dad, try a sports night instead. Whether it’s tossing around the frisbee or shooting hoops at the park down the street, casual, unorganized sports are a great way to get the heart pumping. Remember: the goal of this activity is to exercise, not keep score. Don’t be discouraged if you – or your kids – can’t shoot a perfect jump shot. Have fun and keep moving!

Charity events are an unlikely opportunity to participate in physical activities as a family. Many important non-profit organizations organize fundraising walks, runs, and bike races to support their research and spread awareness of their cause. Consider participating in one and generating donations as a family.

Whatever approach you take to family-friendly fitness, get your kids started at a young age. Building positive habits is easier as an infant than as a teenager or adult. The lessons you teach today could contribute to better health for a lifetime.

At Paleoethics, we aspire to promote healthy living for Canadian families by manufacturing and selling high-performance natural supplements that contribute to nutrition and keep you fuelled for your busy days.
